What is a top level domain name?

Domain names which have one suffix are called top level domain names or TLDs. Examples of these are yahoo.com, att.net and ilisys.com.

Top level domains ending in .com, .net, .org, .biz and .info are open to any person to register. Other top level domain names such as .edu, .gov and .mil are limited to US educational institutions, government and military organisations.
