IMAP stands for Internet Message Access Protocol, and is used by some email client programs to access email on a mail server. For most people, POP is prefered as it is simpler and allows download of email directly to your own personal computer.

However, where you want to share email accounts between multiple users, and don't want to use webmail, then you may find IMAP suitable.
